One of my friends has started a thematic collection on coins depicting books.
Any suggestions are most welcome.
Thanks.

If he should transfer his attention to 18th century British tokens, a book was published in 1915:- Tokens of the Eighteenth Century Connected with Booksellers & Bookmakers by W Longman. This lists many such tokens.
Here is a quotation from the book...

...It does not appear surprising that in 1794 Lackington found that he had to move to larger premises in Finsbury Square. His new shop was called The Temple of the Muses, and it no doubt deserved the following words of praise, which appeared in a contemporary magazine: ' The shop of Lackington may be deemed one of the curiosities of the metropolis, and deserves to be visited by every stranger, on account of the vast extent of the premises, and of the immense stock of books which are brought into one point of view.'...

2004 50 Euro Bicentenary of Napoleon's coronation

I thought Napoleon III would strike a coin with his uncles, but no one found.

Louis Phillippe I, 1 Centime, 1847

Charter of 1830

The unique emblem of July Monarchy showing its constitutions was quite intriguing, so was the King's title: "King of the French", not "King of France".

A confusing coin for several reasons:

  • Not in any catalogue I have.
  • Cu-Ni, not a coin metal in 1847.
  • Too detailed for a small flan.
I suspect this is a private medal.

750 Years of the Secret History of the Mongols.
Mongolian People's Republic, 100 Tubrik, 1990

The original book was not depicted on the coin, because all surviving scripts are in Chinese, the transliterated version known as "The Secret History of Yuan Dynasty", used by the Chinese to teach Mongol language.

I did find four very similar denominations listed under patterns in Krause.
