UNESCO to launch precious coins, medallions on its activities

New York, US - UNESCO on Monday announced it will launch a new collection of precious coins and medallions to highlight its activities and achievements. A UNESCO statement, obtained by PANA in New York, said: 'The collection will be launched in conjunction with one of the world's leading precious metals refiners, PAMP S.A. (Produits Artistiques Métaux Précieux), which was chosen as a partner following an international selection process'.

It said that the new collection would build on the success of the World Heritage coins and medallions minted in individual countries and featuring monuments and sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List, such as Venice, Saint Petersburg, Machu Picchu, Borobudur, Abu Simbel and the Victoria Falls National Park/Mosi-oa-Tunya.

It also noted that, 'UNESCO is encouraging its 195 member states to join the new programme and produce coins and medallions, as part of the collection, for their country'.

'The first ones are scheduled for release at the end of this year,' the statement said.

It also said that, 'the collection will celebrate UNESCO's activities and achievements in education, science, culture and communication, official events, anniversaries, international days, years and decades'.

It also added that, 'the items will be minted in gold, silver, bronze and base metals and will be presented in a web catalogue and made available through a distribution network in participating countries.'

Sounds interesting, but ... aren't they a little late? Many countries have already issued coins (or "coins" ) that feature Unesco Heritage sites. So a series of coins that basically repeat what has been issued so far would probably not be welcomed by collectors. Focusing only on those that have not "done" such coins yet would make more sense but leave many sites out ...

In February UNESCO opens trade of coins of precious metals

Baku, Fineko/abc.az. Since February UNESCO opens ithe release of a new collection of coins from precious metals on the occasion of its 70th anniversary.

According to the Organization, a collection of commemorative coins made of gold and silver can be purchased from February 2015 individually and in the set.

"Coins are produced respectively by three of the World's best-known mints – the Royal Australian Mint, the Royal Canadian Mint, and le Monnaie de Paris.  UNESCO established the Commemorative Coins and Medals Programme in 2012, in partnership with the Swiss company Produits Artistiques Métaux Précieux (PAMP)," it was reported.

The new collection of coins are themed on the Great Barrier Reef (Australia), the Rocky Mountains (Canada), Mount Fuji (Japan), the monuments of les Invalides  and le Grand Palais (France).

"Crafted with great mastery and produced in both gold and silver, the collection reflects not only the natural beauty of each place, but more importantly the everlasting and universal value of each location as a UNESCO World Heritage site. UNESCO has issued a range of coins and medals within the partnership in order to promote the Organization's flagship programmes and activities to new audiences, and to enhance UNESCO's recognition and visibility," it was informed.
