Title: December competition 2020
Post by: andyg on December 24, 2020, 07:13:05 PM
It's back....

A year I'd sooner not repeat - but at least we have time for some covid-secure fun before the end of the year  ;D

Same rules as always -
Simply PM me your answers and I will post the amount you have correct, send as many PM's with answers as you like.  To win if you have 10 correct answers we will hold a draw, if no one has 10 then the 1st prize goes to whoever has most.

Please do not post answers in this thread.

Last entry is 31st December 2020, after which I will post the prize (s) to the winner (s).

Good luck :)

Great! Thanks once again Andy! And this year for some reason I'm at home the whole Christmas period and not rushing around seeing relatives, so have time for the competition  ;D

Thanks Andyg for the hard work. As I say every year, it is always a lot of fun. I don't think I can get too many this year, but I will definitely give it a try. :)

So many replies, while it's getting more difficult. This community is getting smarter all the time. ;D

Cool quiz again, thank you, Andy! And I think I had two answers or good guesses, or one and a half or so, thus chickened out. ;)

It was certainly more than meets the eye this time round. Just when I thought I had it in the bag, I had to go back to the drawing board, not once, not twice... but three times. The last one was the trickiest by far as I convinced myself it was Arabic script rather than a rim design

Thanks for holding the competition again. It was not more difficult than other years. The Australian piece I thought it was South American.

A neat challenge as always, thanks Andy.  :)

Normally I know one or two immediately, but none this year. I got to 6 fairly quickly but it took me days to progress further from there until I found another, cracked the code and found the last.

Great fun.  ;D

Malj1 gave me the numbers - 8 6 5 2 4 3 7 1

Chrisild allocated each set of answers a number as follows,

mmiguel - 3
spabreda - 7
fosseway - 4
bart - 1
quaziright - 2
velind - 8
africancoins - 6
mrbadexample - 5

So first is 8 - Velind,
second is 6 - africancoins
third is 5 - mrbadexample

I will be in touch, as usual everyone else will get a small prize for entering....

All that remains is the question -
why do some countries use such unusual denominations.....?

From a snow covered, wind swept and locked-down (UK) Midlands a happy new year to everyone, and hopefully 2021 will be a better year for all.

Congratulations to all participants! Since everything is different in 2020, I am throwing in a COVID-19 prize for one of the incomplete answers as encouragement.

As for the funny denominations, the one for Surinam is IIRC linked to a bungled process to take off two zeroes from the local denomination.

Apparently, you were not dreaming of a white Christmas, andyg. I have a lot of sympathy for that thought. My standard solution is to find a way to turn a negative turn of events into an opportunity. In this case, I can recommend a slight overdose of mulled wine to combat the blues ... uhh ... whites. :D

Nice & interesting completion every year. Every year I look at the images & wonder how will anyone guess these coins, its so tough for me to guess even one! I guess I need to increase my global coins knowledge more now.  ;) :)

As for "snow covered", we do not have that pesky white stuff around here ;D but lots of people are on day trips to the Sauerland for example, the Harz, or other areas where there is snow. Not a good idea these days ...

... but I am happy to see that quite a few members did have good ideas here, and are among the competition winners. Congrats everybody! And an extra Thank You to Peter for the extra prize. :)

I would like to give my heartfelt thanks to Figleaf for the wonderful prize I received a couple days ago. It’s a 10euro commemorating the Konstanzer Konzil which I will be looking forward to reading up on over the weekend

Again, a wonderful tradition from andyg that made 2020 end on a good note, atleast for me!
