Wondering if it's OK to create this post to collect ideas or guesses for commemorative coins releases for 2016 and 2017. Would others be interested to post here? This issue is also confirmed. :)

Commemorative coin on Indira Gandhi in 2017 seems very unlikely to me for obvious reasons. ;)

In 2008, after his second assembly election win in 2007, Mr. Narendra Modi, current Prime Minister of India, wrote a book in Gujarati titled ‘Jyotipunj’ (Beams of Light) in which he retold the life stories of 16 men who inspired him.
Does any one have the list of those 16 persons?
They may get covered in next 3 - 4 years.

These are suggested by state governments.
Many time, they are again sent when asked for fresh suggestions.
Once listed in agenda, they linger on for few years.
1000 years of coronation of Rajendra Chola is still in the list although it was suggested three years back, around the same time as S Radhakrishnan.

Now the mint also is very active since the coins released but not issued form a good source of revenue by way of sets. The sets are opened for booking almost along with release. They have a big database of set buyers who are sent booking open marketing literature by electronic media.

2016 will have more releases than 2015.

Was just hoping to wait on the official communication for the Banaras Hindu University coin.

Thanks all for taking the time to provide your input for new coin subjects for the next two years. Let's track these subjects and the members posting them.

Not quite sure where the official government communication resides. There is none to be found on the interwebs. BHU Centenary coin release seems certain, just no announcement from the concerned ministries yet (Prime Minister's Office, Finance, Culture or Human Resource Development). As soon as such information is made available, it will be posted on the above thread. Looking forward to this coin and others in 2016.

Generally if something is put up by Sudhir Lunawat, its more or less confirmed. Lets wait and watch.

Does this person work in the Finance Ministry? Is it insider information or through RTI? It is quite amazing for limited individuals to have such unrestricted access to information and be worth finding the 'source'. Anyway, India Post did release a stamp on Rajendra Chola last year in March 2015 during a conference on Indian Ocean (See here: http://betterphilately.blogspot.com/2015/03/india-post-needs-research-unit-for.html).

Maharana Pratap has been in offing for quite sometime. As to whether we should have it again as we had it in 2003 is an individual opinion. But it looks like all set to get one this year.

There is a message thread with this topic as well. This coin release is officially confirmed by the government, while some of the recent ones have yet to be notified. The pictures being posted on Facebook look so unreal. A similar picture for the Dr. B. R. Ambedkar coin had no resemblance to the actual coin released in Dec 2015. The Facebook guy just makes them up on his own. Good for him.

Pretty sure the official explanation will be that the first coin was only to honor the valor and sacrifice of this Mewar ruler, but the latest one is to commemorate a special occasion, viz. Maharana Pratap's 475th birth anniversary. One wonders if another coin will be released during the 500th birth anniversary (Year 2040) as well, or is that too far to think ahead?

It's easy to create a coin design. Refer to board on member design, where members have created coins for fun.

That would depend on which party is in power.

Maharana Pratap is standard recommendation from Rajasthan every year. Very much like Shivaji from Maharashtra, Gandhi from Gujarat, Subhash Bose from Bengal.
It was only when there was a Vice President from Rajasthan that a coin on Rathore was issued.

Other states apparently have more varied recommendations.

Some topics from central ministries are more interesting since they commemorate events or organisations and not individuals.

Are you not fed up with too many commems being issued by India?
The are quite a few collector living around Mumbai who have gone above their budget to book UNC sets and would be happy to see such recommendations of topics to be stopped.

I'm happy giving so many recommendations to Indian mints because I do not collect them. ;D ;D ;D I really don't care if they are issuing 5 set annually or 50...

Well, I'm aware of difficulties faced by collectors collecting Indian unc/proof sets..One unc + one proof set of each issue x say 8 issues per year easily crosses 50-60k! ::) Add to that single coin sets, restrikes (being advertised as new types by dealers) and you may end up spending nearly 100k annually! It has indeed become very expensive hobby!

Added release dates for Maharana Pratap 475th Birth Anniversary and Banaras Hindu University Centenary Year. Let's see if there are other coin releases in the next few months. Deendayal Upadhyaya and University of Mysore would be the next ones, unless Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is released earlier than November as well.

Tatya  Tope should be next since it is the only one with gazette notification issued.

Mysore University is due on July 7th.

It may be preceded by Nabakalebar Rath Yatra if the same is not totally dropped.

There does not seem to be any gazette notification on this subject.
Normally, that is pre required for indication of final approval of design so that mint can make release sets.
I do not think release coins can be made before the indicated date.

Does someone maintain a list of gazette notification dates and release function dates?
