Hats come in all shapes and sizes and are used for all sorts of social and cultural purposes. Some types of headgear are taboo in certain situations: Atatürk banned the fez in Turkey; in modern France it is illegal to wear face-covering headgear in public. Let's see how many different types of headgear we can find on coins.
NOTE: Please do not post coin designs showing crowns or the liberty cap here, as they have their own topics:

True, he sports this, but he doesn't define it as a signature...that'd probably go to Maulana Abdul Kalam or Sheikh Abdullah who sported it much before he did, and people here would associate it alot more with them. But alas, both are not yet commemorated on coins...In fact, if you see most pictures of Jinnah, he barely actually wears that cap...you'd more likely find him with a pipe and drink in hand ;D

You are quite right, Pabitra. I was far away from home and library, looking for a hat and borrowed the picture from the net. It may have been this site (http://www.chiefacoins.com/Database/Countries/Pervez_Musharraf.htm). Tunku Rahman, Father of Malaysia, 1971, 5 Ringgit.
The headgear is called "songkok", which was said to be an adaptation of a fez and almost every Malay man wears it (contrary to the lavish headgear some Muslim dictators wear.) It is an important part of Malay identity.
Although a modern "Mat" prefers baseball cap, the songkok is at least worn on Fridays.

Holland, 2 gulden, 1681. A hat on a stick. Or is it a hat stand?
That is the Liberty Pole - a lance with the cap of liberty. See here (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_Maiden) (English), and also there (https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piek_(geld)) (Dutch) for example ...

We have a special Liberty Cap section (http://www.worldofcoins.eu/forum/index.php/topic,19269.0.html).

That is an interesting observation by itself.

Designer hats in ancient Egypt? Cool!
Is there a special name for that type of hat?

Somewhat complicated question. The crown as pictured on the coin is incomplete and that of one of the few Nefertiti busts still in existence. It would have had a cobra on its tail (uraeus) jutting out from the front. That crown (and also an incomplete rendition) is known today as the Nefertiti cap, because no other pharaoh wore it. The normal crown for a pharaoh is the crown of upper and lower Egypt or double crown.

A crown, then. But it looks so very different from what we regard as crowns these days, that I would have expected a different term.

Only today did I learn that this coin does not represent a woman.

The design is based on a real woman -
Sabiha Tansuğ, an ethnologist. She was photographed during her exhibition of traditional Anatolian woman headdresses in 1968.
