Title: Hats and other headgear
Post by: <k> on March 17, 2013, 01:02:17 PM
Hats come in all shapes and sizes and are used for all sorts of social and cultural purposes. Some types of headgear are taboo in certain situations: Atatürk banned the fez in Turkey; in modern France it is illegal to wear face-covering headgear in public. Let's see how many different types of headgear we can find on coins.

NOTE: Please do not post coin designs showing crowns or the liberty cap here, as they have their own topics:

1] Crowns on coins (http://www.worldofcoins.eu/forum/index.php/topic,11037.0.html)

2] The liberty cap on coins (http://www.worldofcoins.eu/forum/index.php/topic,19269.0.html)

The hat as a signature on Jinnah (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muhammad_Ali_Jinnah).

Peter

True, he sports this, but he doesn't define it as a signature...that'd probably go to Maulana Abdul Kalam or Sheikh Abdullah who sported it much before he did, and people here would associate it alot more with them. But alas, both are not yet commemorated on coins...In fact, if you see most pictures of Jinnah, he barely actually wears that cap...you'd more likely find him with a pipe and drink in hand  ;D

I could not locate this coin which has been referred by you.
As per my records, Pakistan has never issued 5 Rupees coin on Jinnah.
Perhaps Obverse of one got attached to reverse of other.
I shall be highly grateful, if you can locate and confirm existence of this coin.

You are quite right, Pabitra. I was far away from home and library, looking for a hat and borrowed the picture from the net. It may have been this site (http://www.chiefacoins.com/Database/Countries/Pervez_Musharraf.htm). The site notes: "Most of the above eight pattern 5 Rupees coins were also made in Aluminum with double thickness, plain edge and have weight of 2.20 grams each. These Aluminum coins were firstly seen in public in November 2009."

Tunku Rahman, Father of Malaysia, 1971, 5 Ringgit.

The headgear is called "songkok", which was said to be an adaptation of a fez and almost every Malay man wears it (contrary to the lavish headgear some Muslim dictators wear.) It is an important part of Malay identity.
Although a modern "Mat" prefers baseball cap, the songkok is at least worn on Fridays.

The songkok-wearing boy (Mukhsin) is about to kiss his love (Orked), in a Malaysian film directed by the late Yasmin Ahmad.

The headgear is a type of Fútóu(Head Wrapper), it began during the Tang Dynasty (with its ribbons flown behind).

(The hat's Tang Dynasty predecessor, worn by Emperor Taizong, China 1987 100yuan)
During Song Dynasty, it developed into a bamboo hat coated with silk and painted black, with the ungodly long "wings" behind.

Somewhat complicated question. The crown as pictured on the coin is incomplete and that of one of the few Nefertiti busts still in existence. It would have had a cobra on its tail (uraeus) jutting out from the front. That crown (and also an incomplete rendition) is known today as the Nefertiti cap, because no other pharaoh wore it. The normal crown for a pharaoh is the crown of upper and lower Egypt or double crown.
