Title: 2019 coins in circulation
Post by: eurocoin on February 23, 2019, 10:08:21 PM
The 2019-dated 1 pound coin has now entered circulation.

Production of shield 10p and shield 50p coins for circulation has started.

I got a 2019 £1 in my change a couple of days ago. It's the earliest I can ever remember getting a coin from the current year.

The A-Z 10p appear to be being issued as usual in bags - So far, unlike the 2018 dated issue, they don't seem to be muddled in with large quantities of old 10p (which included Copper-Nickel ones going back to 1992!) and there seem to be very few different letters in each bag.

In those circumstances, I could imagine a circle of UK coin traders, exchanging different types. All it would take is an organiser. This site is open for private and public communication among members.

Hi,

a long time ago I passed here, since I'm not too happy with the file size limits, but I was whiling around and thought I would say hello, since my variant documentations are too big for your limits, sic!

I have the five 2 euro coins from Germany (Bundesrat) from 2019 and to top that of, also a 2019 25 cents (Lovell) from the US. As usual nothing from the UK.... hic.

Ciao
Ole

When asked about the Royal Mint's commemorative coin for this special day, special no longer, Phillip Hammond said that he doesn't know if the coin has been minted, and if it has, then they will be collector pieces. Interesting that he didn't suggest instead that the coins would be destroyed or never see the light of day

Since we know that they have not been minted bar a few specimens that have no date on them. Also the Brexit 50p's were never intended to be released for general circulation. They will be released whenever Brexit happens, if it happens.

Nothing significant as I know it's already been reported here, but I received both a 2019 £1 coin and a 2019 Dent 50p in change today.  Significant for me as I still haven't received a single 2018-dated coin in change apart from the £1 (which doesn't count as it's still a new coin and possibly still replacing old coins withdrawn in 2017).  Apart from 1p, 5p, £1 and a couple of Beatrix Potter 50p coins, I haven't had any other 2017 coins in change either.

It's unusual for higher-value standard coins to be issued this early in the year.  50p coins and £1 coins in the past have usually been issued towards the end of the year (apart from the issue of the new £1 in 2017).

What does surprise me is that it's a Dent 50p that's been issued.  It suggests a decision not to issue more recent commemoratives is deliberate, and not because of low demand for new coins.

Perhaps, ''side effects'' of the declining use of the £2 coins, which means more of 50p and the new £1 are being needed?

Royal Mint's plan of ripping of coin collectors by not issuing commemorative 50p coins into circulation becomes obvious...

My thoughts are that Dent's 50p will remain in circulation to meet demand whereas commemoratives tend to be hoarded by people when introduced into circulation.

I think it's more likely a declining use of coins overall in the UK, there has been a big switch to plastic over the last two years - especially as contactless payments have made it more acceptable to pay small amounts on debit cards.

Have a few £1 coins, 1 x 20p and 1 x Dent 50p.

Have probably found more by myself for 2019 than I have for 2018...

When I was in the UK the other week I got numerous 2019 £1s and one (slightly grotty) 2019 Dent 50p in change, but no 20p.

And it only took me four months to get one, yesterday!  Indeed, my first one dated after 2016.

On April 1 of this year, the Royal Mint had not yet started production of at least the following denominations: 1p, 2p and 2 pounds.

The Paddington at the Tower of London 50p coin has today been released by the cash centres. The first collectors have reported having found them in sealed bags obtained from banks and post offices.

Similar here but also have 5p.  Received three of those recently.

Seen a fair few newly-issued 2017-dated 1p coins lately, suggesting the 2019 hasn't been issued yet.

Based on information that I was just provided by The Royal Mint I do not expect that the mintage figures of the 2019-dated coins for general circulation will be released any time soon. There is even a chance that it will not be before the end of the year.

I am not even going to bother trying to find out the new release date. Will just post them on the forum once they are out. Everything is a mess, also at other mints.

The Royal Mint has now released its annual report (https://www.royalmint.com/globalassets/__rebrand/_structure/about-us/annual-reports/reports/2019_20-royal-mint-limited-annual-report.pdf) over the financial year 2019-2020 so the release of the mintage figures should be imminent, likely next week.

Interesting, because I got one in change last time I was in the UK (Christmas 2019). It doesn't look like it came from a set.
