The news about the coin was already confirmed by the Reserve Bank of Fiji. It was World of Coins Forum on which the issuance of the coins was unveiled weeks prior to the official announcement last year. The coin will be a 50 cents coin.

It appears that there indeed will be a $7 coin and a banknote. :)

New $7 note and commemorative coin to be launched on Thursday

Tuesday 18/04/2017

The new $7 note and commemorative coin to commemorate the Vodafone Fiji 7s team's Olympic gold medal win will be launched on Thursday.

As earlier highlighted by Fijivillage, the Reserve Bank of Fiji has announced that the commemorative circulation banknote and coin will be officially unveiled by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama at 7pm this Thursday at the Grand Pacific Hotel.

The note and coin will feature the Olympic gold medal winning team.

Former coach Ben Ryan will also be at the official launch.

RBF Governor Barry Whiteside says that these will be legal tender banknotes and coins, however, given that these will be truly iconic banknotes and coins in terms of their designs, form and other features, it is expected that they would fast become collectors' items and would be rarely seen in circulation.

Whiteside says these banknotes and coins will always hold a special place since they celebrate Fiji's first ever Gold medal win at an Olympic event, a victory that was celebrated nation‑wide by all Fijians as well as those abroad.

Work on the banknote and coin began in August 2016, immediately after the Fiji Rugby 7s team won the Gold medal.

Governor Whiteside says the design and production works which usually take a good 12 to 18 months has been achieved in 8 months, with truly remarkable results.

He says they are pleased that they are able to deliver to all Fijians a high quality banknote and coin that would mean a lot to many Fijians and an inspiration to aspiring sportsmen and women as well as our children.

Only a limited number of this commemorative banknote and coin have been produced.

They will be issued through commercial bank branches from this Friday.

RBF 'bore cost of special $7 note, 50c coin'

GOVERNMENT and taxpayers did not pay anything at all for commemorative $7 notes for the Rio Olympics gold medal-winning Fiji national 7s team.

This was clarified by Attorney-General and Economy Minister Aiyaz Sayed- Khaiyum in a ministerial statement in Parliament yesterday.

He said the cost of this was borne by the Reserve Bank of Fiji alone.

RBF recently unveiled the new iconic $7 banknote and a special 50 cents coin to commemorate Fiji's historic gold medal win at the Rio Olympics last year.

"It is important to note that the unit cost of producing one $7 bank note is in fact lower than the cost of an existing $5 note, which is approximately 30 cents," Mr Sayed- Khaiyum said.

"Let me highlight here that Government and taxpayers did not bear this cost at all.

"The RBF is confident that the cost will be fully recovered from the sale of special uncut sheets of $7 bank note."

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said uncut notes had been one of the biggest revenue earners for RBF in recent years.

The sale of the sheets of $7 note is expected to generate about $3m to $4m.

He clarified that no additional cost was incurred in the minting of the new Rio gold 50 cents coin.

"Madam Speaker there was no cost involved in doing this additional design."

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the value of the currency was not determined by the pictures on the note.

"Through these coins, the nation salutes these people and officials.

"Madam Speaker the reality also is that the value of the currency is not determined by the picture on the notes and coins but rather the two-way trade between Fiji and its major trading partners," he said.

The coin and note were launched at a special event last Thursday (April 20).

One wonders who the minister thinks owns the reserve bank of Fiji. :)
