It's also because copper-plated steel coins are thicker than those made of bronze.  They have to be to maintain the weight as steel is lighter than bronze.  Same is true of the nickel-plated steel coins in comparison to cupro-nickel.

I see. But the slots would have to be wider than a penny in order to accommodate other coins. I was sure that I had heard of older machines whose weight requirement had been triggered by different-sized coins.
