Ahmadnagar Burhan III two third falus Daulatabad
« on: August 08, 2019, 09:54:27 PM »
Here is a two third falus coin of Burhan Nizam shah III, Daulatabad first series.
I am unable to quite fit this to N59, G&G where "Burhan" is clear on the illustration. The legend arrangement corresponds to Type 40 of Rajgor except the mint. G&G does not cross refer this type. On the coin, "Burhan" is above a horizontal line, Nizam falling above and to the left of "Burhan". There is no possibility of another line of legend above this legend. Mint is no doubt Daulatabad. So imo it should be a specimen of N52 of G&G.

Nice find ! I can't give any counterargument to your reasoning. However, over the past decade increasing numbers of specimen have surfaced which are not in G&G. It is good that an update of this standardwork is already planned.

Mohammed Abdul Wali Khan, an exponent in the medieval Sultanate coins has given the following arrangement for Burhan-III coins in general. There must have been different arrangements as classified by G&G. This  corresponds to Daulathabad series one, with "nizam" in top line in G&G. This coin in undoubtedly that type. So it almost fixes it to N52.
Khan sahib says that Burhan-III had minted coins at Daulatabad and is significantly silent about his Ahmadnagar mint. It is because he has observed that Ahmadnagar was long lost to the Mughals and even Murtaza-II should have issued coins from other mints with mint name put as Ahmadnagar. This reference is on p.20 of "Copper coins of Barid Shahi dynasty of Bidar and Nizam Shahi dynasty of Ahmadnagar", Numismatic bulletin, no. 2, authored by Parmeshwari Lal Gupta and Mohd Abdul Wali Khan, published by Birla Archaeological & Cultural Research Institute, Hyderabad 1982.
