Western SMT Co.
The Western Scottish Motor Traction Company Limited was formed in 1929 by the renaming of Scottish General Transport Co. Ltd, after the British Electric Traction subsidiary was acquired by the [Scottish Motor Traction] group (see also Central SMT. The SMT group was nationalised by the Attlee government in 1949. Western SMT became part of a British Transport Commission subsidiary, Scottish Omnibuses Ltd., which continued to operate as "SMT" until the early 1960s, when the fleet name "Eastern Scottish" was adopted.
Following the demise of the British Transport Commission, the SMT operations became part of the state-owned Scottish Bus Group in 1962; this became the Scottish Transport Group in 1969. In preparation for privatisation, the company was split into Clydeside Scottish and Western Scottish in 1985. Western Scottish was privatised by a management buy-out in 1991 and acquired by Stagecoach in 1994, leading to a new name: Stagecoach West Scotland.
