1904-1929

The corporation took over the tramway in September 1904. With the tramway making a profit, in 1905 the Electricity and Tramway committee agreed that tram tokens could be sold to tradesmen for 10/- per gross (144 tokens) subject to the tradesmen paying for the tokens and taking at least one gross[1]. The tradesmen could have their name embossed on the tokens if they paid for the cost of having the embossing done. For the year ending March 1907 the operating profits covered the interest on loans but did not cover payments to the sinking fund and depreciation fund, resulting in a net loss[2]. For the year ending March 1908 the operating profits covered the interest on loans but did not cover payments to the sinking fund and depreciation fund, resulting in a net loss. The situation was worse for the year ending March 1909, with lower income and lower operating profit. The coporation therefore took numerous economy measures. This included no longer selling 1d tokens at 10/- per gross.
