The earliest public transportation in Paisley was by stagecoach. In 1819, three stagecoaches a day connected Paisley and Glasgow. The first tramway network in Paisley was created by the Paisley Tramways Order of 1885. The Paisley Tramways Company, headed by a Dublin businessman by the name of Murphy, started a horse-drawn tramway service on 30th December 1885. On 17th September 1903, this company was succeeded by the Paisley District Tramways Company, for the purpose of modernising the network. The electric tram service was inaugurated on 13 June 1904. The Paisley District Tramways Company was taken over by Glasgow Corporation Tramways on 1 August 1923. Trams continued to ride in Paisley until the late 1950s.
Private bus companies started to appear in 1910. Companies multiplied in the following decade. This was probably the reason why Paisley turned over its tram network to Glasgow. In the 1930s, the private bus companies were folded into large regional networks. The first of them was Western SMT Co.. From June 8, 1941, some buses used experimental gas balloon holders to save fuel and support the war effort. From 1968, local bus lines were organised by the Strathclyde Passenger Transport Executive (SPTE).
