In the mid 1970s the population of Nizhny Novgorod surpassed a million, meeting the Soviet requirement for a metro system. Construction started on December 17, 1977. The first section of the present network was opened on November 20, 1985. It was the tenth metro system in in the Soviet Union.
The current logo of the Nizhny Novgorod metro network is a red M on a blue circle with the main device of the coat of arms of Nizhny Novgorod.
