The first Dutch phone booth was installed in 1931. When 2½ cent coins were demonetised in 1942, during the nazi occupation, a replacement token was introduced. Its format was retained when the price of a basic unit increased to 5 cents in 1945. Almost all Netherlands telephone tokens have the same size as Dutch coins: 23.5 mm for 2½ cents, 15 mm for 10 cents and 19 mm for 25 cents. In the 1950s, the basic unit cost was raised to 10 cents. During the 1960s, a basic unit started costing 25 cents. At this time, there were enough coins in circulation and the production of tokens was halted.

The cities of Amsterdam and The Hague exploited a city network, using 10 cent tokens. The later tokens of the Amsterdam stock exchange have a slightly different size, so they could only be used inside the stock exchange building. VvdE stands for Vereniging voor de effectenhandel (society for the equities trade).

Test tokens are known. They are coppered coins of 10 and 25 cents engraved with a number or an S.
