The National Coal Board was one of a number of public corporations created by Clement Attlee's post-war Labour government to run nationalised industries. Set up under the Coal Industry Nationalisation Act 1946, it took over the responsibility for the British mines on 1 January 1947.
In 1987 the NCB was renamed the British Coal Corporation. Its assets were subsequently privatised.
