Murray, Greenock
John Murray's omnibus started running in October 1856. It ran between Bentinck Street, Greenock and Cartsdyke, 7 times a day.
Early in the morning of 5th June 1857 a coach owner, Mr Cruickshanks, and his men were passing by John Murray's stable in Crawfurd Street when they noticed that one of the omnibuses was on fire. They broke into the stable and put out the fire but the omnibus was badly damaged. The fire was believed to have been started by a spark from a pipe. On 3rd July the good omnibus, seven horses, two sets of harness, and the omnibus frame were sold at auction for £170 to David Smith, spirit dealer, who intended running an omnibus between Greenock and Gourock.
As John Murray was bankrupt, on the 14th July there was a call for creditors to make a claims against his estate.
