Even before the October revolution, plans were made for an underground railway in Moscow. They were interrupted by war and the communist takeover until planning started in 1923 resulted in the start of construction, presumably in the early 1930s. The first section was opened to the public on 15th May 1935. The Stalinist regime stressed the superiority of the Moscow Metro over metros in capitalist societies and the Metro's role as a prototype for the Soviet future. The network has been expanded continuously. Its hub-and-spokes model was confirmed with the Koltsevaya line, the first ring line, constructed between 1950 and 1954 and boasting a large number of Stalinist style stations. Today, the Moscow metro is among the largest in the world in terms of track length.
It is unclear if the Moscow metro has a logo. The same station may use different logos for its entrances. Most use a simple red M in different styles, which may be without further decoration, inside a circle, a tunnel or a swirl. The logo shown may be the official logo now.
As of 1999, the tokens are no longer valid.
