Background

The town of Marstrand lies on two islands, Marstrandsön and Koön, at the end of a peninsula in southern Bohuslän. Its small size (population 1,319 in 2010) belies its historic importance as the only harbour on the west coast that was reliably ice-free all winter. It is dominated by the 17th-century fortress Carlstens fästning, built shortly after the conquest of Bohuslän from the Norwegians. It also played a prominent role during the herring periods of the 18th and 19th centuries.

During the 20th century Marstrand became a popular tourist destination, with its combination of a historic castle, many opportunities for sailing and bathing, and plenty of places to eat and drink. It is in this context that the tokens used on the ferries were issued.

Until 1913, the route between Koön and Marstrandsön was served by local boatmen acting as taxis, who rowed visitors and residents over the short strait. The new cable ferry (incidentally Sweden's first electrically powered ferry) was inaugurated in 1913 using a converted tram body on a floating platform. The ferry still exists today, as part of the Västtrafik public transport network.

Token issues

Tokens were issued for the route between 1913 and 1972 in denominations that closely follow the changes in fare (see the table below). Between 1954 and 1972 there were separate summer and winter fares, reflecting Marstrand's popularity as a summer tourist destination, as well as a higher nighttime fare.

1913-1918 3 öre
1918-1950 5 öre
