Kharkiv in Wikipedia

Under Soviet rule, a city had to have a population of at least 1 million to qualify for an underground rail network. However, planning for a metro in Kharkiv started much sooner, as it was the capital of the Ukranian SSR until 1934. Kharkiv crossed the 1 million line only in 1941. Planning for a metro started was halted, though, as Kharkiv became a front line city that changed hands several times. After the second world war, the city was largely destroyed and the population drastically reduced. The city reached the 1 million point again in 1962. Planning was taken up again and construction started in 1968. The first line was opened to the public on 23 August 1975.

Ukranian arms

The state coat of arms occurs on Kharkiv tokens. It was adopted in 1992. Commonly known as the trident, its official designation is the seal of Volodymyr the Great. Present and historical arms occur on Kharkiv metro tokens. For an overview of their history and significants see here. The present arms also served in the periods 1781-1878 and 1887-1918. There are tokens with the monument on Lenin avenue (Lenina Prospekt) to the mythical Cossack Kharko (the Ukrainian form of Zacharias), said to be the founder of the city. The mirror stream is a monument with fountain built in 1947 to commemorate the second world war. The monument for Taras Shevchenko was built in 1935. Shevchenko was an important Ukrainian poet and writer who had a great influence on the development of the Ukranian language. The latter two monuments are both on Sumska street
