Italian influence Telephone Tokens
After the Italo-Turkish War (1911–1912), Italy turned three Libyan regions (Cyrenaica, Tripolitania and Fezzan) into colonies. From 1912, the three were jointly known as Italian North Africa. From 1927, the territory was split into two colonies, Italian Cyrenaica and Italian Tripolitania. From 1934, the parts were united again and named Libya. From 1943 to 1951, Libya was under Allied occupation. Italy relinquished its claims to Libya by the 1947 peace treaty with the Allies. In 1951, Libya became independent.
Rhodes was taken from the Ottoman empire by Italian troops in 1912. Turkey ceded the island in the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne. It then became the core of the Italian possession of the Isole Italiane dell'Egeo. When Italy surrendered to the Allies in 1943, the British made a failed attempt to control Rhodes and the Dodecanese archipelago. It resulted in a nazi occupation of the islands. In 1945 the nazi army surrendered Rhodes as well as the Dodecanese to the British, who soon after obtained the islands as a military protectorate. In 1947, Rhodes, together with the other islands of the Dodecanese, was united with Greece.
Except for the Vatican tokens, the tokens on this page were not for insertion into public telephones but receipts for payment to the post office telephone window prior to the call.
