DAF engaged a consultant in 1971 to cope with difficult conditions. One of the recommendations was to split the passenger car and the truck business, another was to find a strong foreign partner. The passenger car branch was eventually sold to Volvo and in 1972, DAF trucks interested International Harvester, a US producer of agricultural machinery in becoming a partner. In 1987, DAF trucks acquired the trucks division of British Leyland. This purchase dragged DAF trucks into insolvency in 1993. In 1996, PACCAR, a US truck builder, took over DAF trucks. The factory in Eindhoven was closed. The DAF pension fund had to be saved from insolvency. PACCAR still uses the brand name in South America.
