James Cowan was born in 1830. Stating with one horse and cart he grew a highly successful general carrier, carting, shipping, and forwarding agents business, Messrs Cowan & Co. This company served a number of railway companies in England and Scotland and a number of shipping companies based on the Clyde.

Cowan & Co. were carting agents for the North British Railway, local railway companies and steamer/shipping companies. There head office was at 25 St. Vincent, Glasgow. They had receiving offices for goods and orders at various locations in Glasgow and Paisley.

The token are said to have been used by the company carts and trucks on the ferries across the Clyde.
