The Brighton General Gas Light Company, formed in 1825, was incorporated by Act of Parliament as the Brighton and Hove General Gas Company in 1839. In 1881 the company took over the undertakings of the Brighton Gas Light and Coke Company and the Aldrington, Hove and Brighton Gas Company. In 1931 the company took over the Worthing Gas Light and Coke Company. At this time the company changed it's name to the Brighton, Hove and Worthing Gas Company. It purchased the Littlehampton Gas Company in 1934 and in the 1949 nationalisation became part of the Sussex County Division of SEGB.
The tokens were used by gas meter readers.
