The earliest remnant of public transportation in the Bath area is The George Inn in Norton St. Philip. It was a coaching inn since the 13th century, servicing a number of stage coach lines. The Bath Tramways Co. Ltd. operated horse-drawn trams from 24th December 1880 to 1902. Bath Electric Tramways operated an electrified tramway service in Bath between July 1902 and December 1939. The company was a subsidiary of the British Electric Traction Co. Ltd. (BETCo). BETCo electrified the tram network. The first electric service ran on 2 January 1904.

Bath Electric Tramways inaugurated local motor bus services in 1905. Bus services between Bath and Bristol, operated by the Bristol Tramways and Carriage Company started in 1906. In 1920, the bus network was transferred to Bath Tramways Motors. The Bristol Tramways and Carriage Company took over the Bath bus and tram networks in December 1936. From 1938, sections of the tramway were phased out. The last tram ran on 6th May 1939.

Bristol Tramways and Carriage was nationalised in 1948. In 1957 it was renamed Bristol Omnibus Company. In 1986, Bristol's services were transferred to Badgerline in a management buy-out operation. In 1995 Badgerline became part of First Bus and in 1999 Southern National was also acquired by First Bus. First combined the two acquisitions in a single company, First Somerset & Avon.
