The Amsterdam Society of Life Insurance was established in 1892, by H.J. van Vulpen and E. Venhuizen. The company was soon better known by its telegram address: Amstleven, a contraction of Amsterdam and Levensverzekeringen. In quick succession, the company moved from the residence of Mr. Van Vulpen (Vijzelgracht 51) to Keizersgracht 729 in 1893, larger premises at Keizersgracht 547-549, a temporary office on Herengracht 414 in 1916 and Nieuwe Spiegelstraat 17 in 1919. Amstleven was quite active in the Netherlands Indies, with an office in Surabaya.

The second world war was a severe blow to the company. Its staff in the Netherlands Indies was imprisoned. The company recovered, but the Indonesian office was closed in 1951 and sold in 1953. In 1967, Amstleven merged with the Hollandsche Sociëteit van Levensverzekeringen, proceeding with the name Delta Verzekeringsgroep N.V.. A further merger with Schadeverzekeringsgroep Nedlloyd in 1969 changed the name to Delta Lloyd Verzekeringsgroep N.V. (Delta Lloyd insurance group), covering property as well as life insurance. This company moved to its present location, Spaklerweg 4 Amsterdam, in 1977.
