The Aberdare Urban District Council operated tramways from 1913 to 1935. Trolleybuses transported passengers to the tram terminals. In 1922, the trolleybus system was extended outward. After 1935 the corporation ran buses. The Aberdare Transport Company was short lived, presumably because its responsibilities were shifted to the Borough of Cynon Valley by the Local Government Act 1972.

In 1992, following the Transport Act 1985, Western Travel purchased Cynon Valley Transport. In November 1993 Western Travel was sold to the Stagecoach Group, which inserted the Aberdare network into its subsidiary Stagecoach South Wales.
