West Benhar had established a branch by 1900. In 1967 the society opened a new small supermarket in Whitburn to service the town's growing population[1]. This society merged with West Lothian in 1969.

WHITBURN CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY 1934-1939

There had been a desire in the population of Whitburn to have it's own co-operative society for some time when the society was formed in November 1934 and regsitered in December[2]. The society was based in a building that was called the Town Hall, which they converted into a shop. The store was at first rented then purchased in 1937.

The society paid an average quarterly dividend of 2s 9d per £1 but in the quarter for August 1939 no dividend was declared. A special meeting was called on 14th August at which, based on a report by the directors, it was agreed to put the society into volountary liquidation. The store was to be kept open for a short period to allow members to buy what they required, after which the store would be closed and the business sold. It was predicted that after sale of the assets the society would be able to meet all of it's obligations.
