Stirling, until the land improvements of the 18th century, was the main land route from the South of Scotland to the North. This strategic position resulted in it becoming the capital of Scotland. The capital moved to Edinburgh with the growth of European trade.
The town was manily a market town although the proximity of the Forth River did result in the developement of manufacturing industry that took advantage of the river for transport. The opening of the railway in 1848 resulted in a decline of river traffic. The declining river traffic enabled the the Alloa Swing Bridge to be constructed in 1885, restricted access for shipping.
STIRLING CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY 1880-1968
The society was formed in 1880. The membership was 57 at the end of the first qurter but by 1887 the society had two branches in Stirling and a baking department[1].
The society joined the SCWS in 1968.
