Stenhouse took it's name after a nearby Roman "stone house". The moor to the north of the house was known as Stenhousemuir. From 1785 it was the home of the Falkirk Tryst, a large gatherings of livestock farmers and buyers. With the decline of Crieff, the Falkirk Tryst was hel three times a year - it continued until the late 19th century.

The original main settlement in the area was Larbert. The arrival of the Carron Iron Works in 1759 and the Falkirk Tryst led to expansion of Stenhousemuir - which remained mainly residential. McCowan's toffee factory was established in the village in 1922.

STENHOUSEMUIR CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY 1916-1976

Stenhousemuir Baking Society was formed in 1847.

A second society was formed in 1861 as the Stenhousemuir Equitable Co-operative Society. The society registered as the Stenhousemuir Co-operative Society and was known as this from before 1870. In 1888 the society obtained ground for building a new store[1]. In 1889 the society started to use it's original name, the Stenhousemuir Equitable Co-operative Society.

There are been attempts to amalgamate the two Stenhousemuir from the 1880s. In 1916 the Stenhousemuir Equitable Co-operative Society and the Stenhousemuir Baking Society amalgamated with the amalgamated society being called Stenhouse Co-operative Society[2].

Due to substantial losses in 1976 the society joined Falkirk in that year.

Based on the use of the term Ltd for Limited The coal tokens will be from after the 1916 amalgamation.
