SCWS RETAIL BRANCHES 1908-1967

The first retail branch of the SCWS was opened in 1908 in Elgin, which at the time had no co-opertaive society. This was followed by a second branch in a town without a co-operative in 1914, Buckie. The second branch to opened, which was also in 1914, was at West Barns following the failure of that society. The Aberfoyle society was taken over in 1915 because the society was struggling to manage the store. The pattern of taking over struggling societies and establishing stores in dfficult areas continued.

In 1967 the Scottish Co-operative Retail Society was set up to operate the retail branches. The SCRS was wound up in 1977 following the CWS take over of the SCWS in 1973.
