Renfrew had a ferry from ancient times with the current ferry location being used from 1790. This allowed workers to commute between Renfrew and Yoker. Renfrew developed as an engineering centre in the 1800s. William Simons & Co located to Renfrew in 1839 and Lobnitz & Co ( initially named James Henderson & Son) began in Renfrew in 1847. Both companies specialised in dredging plant, with Lobnitz & Co also making rock-cutting plant. IN 1891 Babcock & Wilcox Ltd established a boiler manufacturing plant in Renfrew. Although the shipyards closed down in 1964, the town has continued to have substantial engineering activity.
