Paisley developed as an abbey town and the 15th century construction of the abbey still stands in the centre of Paisley. The town initially developed as a mill town for the manufacture of cloth, absorbing adjacent villages. In 1812 the Clarks identified that making cotton thread for sewing was a profitable business and setup a mill. In 1826, the Coates also set up a thread factory. Coates went on to become one of Scotland's largest industrial concerns, taking over Clarks in 1896. Other mill owners converted their mills to thread making and at one time Paisley was the largest thread producing centre in the world. Cheaper production of synthetic thread abroad, with Coats moved production overseas, led to the demise of the Paisley thread industry, which ceased in 1993.
PAISLEY CO-OPERATIVE MANUFACTURING SOCIETY 1862-1983
A group of weavers in Paisley decided to set up a co-operative to buy yarn and manufacture clothing that it sold. The society was formed in 1862 operating from the secretary's house. They obtained a warehouse in Gauze Street then moved to St Mirren Street. The society did not pay a divdend on purchases until 1868 and in 1869 started an empolyee profit sharing scheme. In 1870 the society allowed other co-operatives to become members, with Paisley Equitable being the first society to obtain shares. In 1873 the society bought a premises in Causewyside Street, which was expanded later to become the society head office and retail outlet.
In 1870 the society allowed other co-operatives to become members, with Paisley Equitable being the first society to obtain shares. In 1874 the membership included thirty seven societies, eight being based in England. In 1883 sixty one societies were members, which had increased to three hundred and eleven by 1903.
In 1890 the society opened a facory and warehouse at Collinslee tha had forty-eight looms. Later that year an extension of the factory to accomdate one hundred looms was approved to meet the growing demand along wih an extension of the warehouse. The extensions were opened in 1898. The picture opposite shows the factory at Collinslee with an inset of the Causewyside Street premises.
After the merger with Paisley Equitable in 1958, the society became the only co-operative society in Paisley. The society also used the name Paisley Co-operative Society after this. It joined the CWS in 1983.

PAISLEY EQUITABLE CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY 1858-1958
Charleston was a village that became absorbed by Paisley.
In the 1850s Paisley was in a trading slump due to the shawl industry disappearing and machinery replacing manual labour. In 1858 the society was formed by five weavers as the Charleston Co-operative Mutual Friends Society. They had very little capital so started with tobacco from a weaver's cottage in Great Hamilton Street. As the capital incresed they added bread then oatmeal, with the entire society's stock kept in a creel [1]. The society is listed as the Paisley Equitable Society in Watson's 1862 Directory of Paisley with the store at 5 Neilston. In the 1870 directory is listed as both Paisley Equitable Co-operative Society and Charleston Co-operative Society with the store in Stock Street. From newspaper advertisements for staff the indication is that the society called itself the Charleston Co-operative Society for most of the 1870s but reverted to Paisley Equitable Co-operative Society by the 1880s.
When the new building was erected in Great Hamilton Street to consolidate the society's stores, the society deposited a lead casket in a foundations stone containing, among other items, tokens then in circulation[2]. At this time they had three provisions stores and a butcher's shop with the intention of opening a bakery and boot store.
The society joined Paisley Co-operative Manufacturing in 1958.

PAISLEY PROVIDENT CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY 1860-1938
Blackhall House, a silk throwing mill, was built by David Speir & Co. in 1848. A few weavers mainly employed in this mill bought some tobacco between them and then some tea. Based on the success they decided to form a co-operative society. A small shop was opened in Shore Street in August 1860, staffed by the committee and open only two evenings a week. By February 1861 they had opened two branches. Another society, West Street, soon merged with Provident, adding another branch. After the inital success trade fell away and by 1869 the trade was less tha 25% of what it had been in 1861, with the board threatening to resign. Things started to improve in 1870. By 1882 the society had a central store in George Street, four branches and a boot shop. In 1886 and 1909 the society had more members and sales than all the other co-opertaive societies in Paisley combined.
The society and Paisley Co-operative Manufacturing agreed to amalgamate in June 1938[3] with Paisley Provident amalgamating with Paisley Co-operative Manufacturing later that year. The society's records extend to 1962 indicating that it continued as a effectively a division of Paisley Co-operative Manufacturing until then.

PAISLEY UNDERWOOD CO-OPERATIVE COAL SOCIETY 1872-1958
The Caledonian Railway opened a coal depot adjacent to the railway in 1858[4]. This was off Underwood Street, called Underwood Coal Depot, adjacent to the railway in 1858.
The society was formed in 1872 as the Underwood Co-operative Coal Company based at Underwood Lane next to Underwood Coal Depot[5].In December the scoiety was holding a meeting to sell enough 5s shares to reach 1000 shares and had commenced selling coal in Januray 1873. The society changed its name to the Paisley Underwood Co-operative Coal Society in the early 1880s. Both Paisley Co-operative Manufacturing and Paisley Equitable had representatives on the Paisley Underwood board.
The society requested members and non-members to bring their coal checks to the office in 1952 for the half yearly stocktaking[6].
The society joined the Paisley Co-operative Manufacturing in 1958.
