Novosibirsk is one of the largest cities in Russia. Planning for a metro system started in the late 1960s. Construction started on 12 May 1979. The system was opened on 7 January 1986. The Novosibirsk network was the eleventh to be opened in the USSR. As the Soviet Union fell apart, work was halted for years, due to lack of funds. Expansion has been resumed around 2010, though.
The logo of the Novosibirsk metro is an M in an oval, resembling a tunnel.
