NEWTON MEARNS CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY 1886-1943
Newton Mearns became a Burgh of Barony in 1621. It saw some industrial developement but the main impetus for growth was the re-alignment of the Kilmarnock/Ayr road through it in 1832, which led to the town developing as a market town for the surrounding area. From the 1750s Newton Mearns also a popular residential lcation for Glasgow business people.
The society was formed in 1886.
The society joined Barrhead in 1943.
