NEWMAINS & CAMBUSNETHAN CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY 1885-1955
Newmains was found to be close to coal and ironstone deposits. This led to the creation of Coltness Ironworks in 1837, close by Newmains, and the subsequent growth of the Newmains to accomodate miners and ironworkers. Although focussing on iron production and mining, Coltness Iron Company introduced steel manufacture in the 1890s and a cement plant in 1909. The blast furnaces were shut down in 1927 but steel production continued. The company's coal mining operations were taken over by the NCB in 1947. The other assets were placed in Coltness Holdings Ltd in 1946, which entered into voluntary liquidation in 1947. The last cement was produced in 1963.
Cambusnethan was originally the main town in the area. It is roughly midway between Wishaw town centre and Newmains town centre. However with the growth of mining and iron/steel working, it became part of Wishaw when the boundaries of Wishaw were extended in 1874.
The society was formed in 1885. The central store was in Newmains. In 1916 the society had branches in Cambusnethan, Morningside and Wishaw - Kirk Road. By 1928 the Wishaw branch had been closed and one opend in Allanton.
The society united with Wishaw in 1955 to form Wishaw & Newmains. Wishaw & Newmains united to Dalziel in 1971.
