We know little of early public transport in the area. There was a horse tram network. Buses started appearing from 1926. The Municipal Borough of Morecambe and Heysham was created in 1928 by joining Morecambe with Heysham. The trams were replaced by buses in 1932. The tokens were issued by the Morecambe and Heysham Corporation Transport Department. This organisation operated at least one joint line with Ribble Motor Services (Morecambe to Hest Bank and Carnforth). Bus histories indicate that the fleet was transferred to Lancaster City Council in 1974, very probably as a consequence of the Local Government Act 1972. By that time, the tokens, having pre-decimal denominations, must have already fallen into disuse. Lancaster City Transport was acquired by Stagecoach at some time after 1993.
