The society was formed in 1860 under the name Montrose Baking and Grocery Co-operative Society. With the objective of enabling workers to invest in a co-operative association, shares were 10/- each. It appears to have not joined the SCWS until after 1900. It appears to have eneterd into a dividend competition with the Montrose Baking and Trading Society leading to the demise of that society. MONTROSE BAKING AND TRADING SOCIETY 1846-1912
In 1846 the move from potatoes to bread had resulted in a large increase in the price of bread in Montrose, with bakeries being sold out. In this year the Montrose Wheaten Bread Society was formed by workers with the aim of providing bread at more realistic prices. In November 1860 it was issuing 500 new shares for househlders only. In 1861 the society decided to restructured itself. It registered under the name Montrose Baking and Trading Society and formally dissolved the Wheaten Bread Society. All memberships and property were transferred to the new society. The Montrose Baking and Trading Society membership had declined from 1195 in 1899 to 706 in 1901 and the society closed in 1912.
