Maybole was the administrative centre of the district of Carrick and a former seat of the Earls of Cassillis. In 1686 twenty eight lords and landowners with estates in Carrick and beyond had townhouses there. A train station was opened in 1856.

Handloom weaving was established in Maybole but by the 1850s this was in decline, with the Maybole weavers mainly completing piecework for the Glasgow and Ayrshire textile mills. Maybole was a centre for leather working that, during the 19th century, led to it becoming a centre for shoe making. skills and during the nineteenth century the tradesmen began to specialise in shoemaking. It has been reported that in 1891 Maybole had ten shoe factories producing about one million pairs of boots and shoes per year. The factories opened The Maybole Shoe Shop in various locations throughout the UK to sell direct to the customers. A farming machinery factory was opened in the 1850s by Alexander Jack.

The traditional industries have been replaced by more modern industries.
