Luton Corporation exploited horse drawn trams, electric trams and buses since 1908. It sold its transport company to the United Counties Omnibus Company (UCOC) on 4th January 1970. Following privatisation in 1980, United Counties was split up operationally from 1 January 1986. In August 1987, Luton & District Transport Company was formed by management buyout. Luton & District was bought in 1994 by British Bus, which in turn was purchased by the Cowie Group on 1 August 1996 and rebranded as Arriva the Shires in 1998.
