Longcroft along with Banknock, Haggs and Dennyloanhead are villages on the road between Bonnybridge and Kilsyth. The map opposite shows Longcroft and some adjacent village in 1896. Banknock is to the westand Bankier to the west and Dennyloanhead to the East.

Apart from a large distillery that operated south of Banknock/Haggs for many years, the main industry of the villages was the coal mining, with the main mine being Banknock Colliery. The Kilsyth and Bonnybridge Railway wwas opened in 1888 to exploit the mineral extractive industries in the area. This included Dennyloanhead railway station, which was adjacent to Longcroft.

The distillery closed in 1928. The railway closed to passengers in 1935 and was closed completely in 1964.

LONGCROFT CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY 1873-1965

The society was formed in 1873. Within three months of opening the store, they had to move to larger premises[1]. In 1874 they took part in a joint venture with the Bonnybridge and the Denny & Dunipace for a bread bakery in Denny. In 1901 they opened a branch in Hollandbush and in 1903 opened their own bakery with a bread shop in Haggs in 1904. The society opened a branch in Allandale in 1914. A small branch store was opened at Haircraigs in 1940.

The society went into decline in the 1950s with the Allandale branch closed in 1958. There were several attempts by the society to amalgmate to Bonnybridge with this finally happening in 1965. It the amalgamation the society owed the SCWS £39,000.

When plastic tokens were introduced, and probably for the metal tokens, the dividend was calculated on the value of tokens purchased, with the tokens being used to puchase goods in the store. Any cash purchases in the stores recieved no dividend.
