Lerwick replace Scalloway as the capital of the Shetland Islands in 1708. Because of it's good harbour, Lerwick developed with the herring fishing industry. There was also a large number of factories and worker's blockhouses set up to support the herring trade. The North Sea oil boom of the 1970s led to more developement, with a large number of houses being built in the Lerwick area.

LERWICK CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY 1904-1912

A meeting was held in May 1904 promoting a co-operative store society in Lerwick, at the end of which names were taken of those interested[1]. A store was opened by the end of June in Carlton PLace selling groceries and provisions[2]. Shares were £1 each but membership could be obtained with a 1s entry fee and 1s towards a share, which gave the member a full dividend entitlement. The balance of the share was to be paid up at 3d per week, for which the quarterly dividend could be used[3]. In May 1905 it was reported that the membership was 118[4].

By 1909 the society had moved to the Victoria Buildings on the Esplanade. Early in that year the society was advertising for new members[5]. In April 1911 offers were invited for the lease of the store and offices occupied by the society [6]. In August the society put all of it's drapery departmet stock on sale at below cost[7].

Possibly due to a failure to negotiate a new lease for the store and offices the society went into volountary liquidation in early 1912[8].
