Law is a village about 3km from Carluke that developed from the 1790 in association with coal mining with the last main mine closing before 1940. Law Hospital, based on nissen huts, was built in 1939 as part of a programme of Emergency Medical Centres for use during World War II. It closed in 2001 when Wishaw Hospital was opened. A railway station, Law Junction Railway Station, was opened in 1880 that closed in 1965.

The map opposite, reproduced with the permission of the National Library of Scotland, shows Law in 1896.
