LAURIESTON CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY 1871-1967
The society was formed in 1871 with a membership of 30 and initially operated from a single room house in Mary Street[1]. After about four years the society moved to larger premises in Boyd Street. In about 1890 the the society aquired a site in Mary Square. They soon added a bakery and in 1897 rebuilt the store.
From about 1920 mergers with Grangemouth and the Redding were considered. The society joined Falkirk in 1967.
In August 1896 there was a proposal for the Society move to tokens only sales[2]. A decision was delayed for three months. The report is that trading in tokens only was rejected as being too impracticable.
