LARKHALL CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY 1879-1970
In 1862 there was a branch of Wishaw Co-operative Society in Larkhall[1]. A meeting was held to form Larkhall Co-operative Society [2]. However this was abandoned with the agreement that the Larkhall people take over operation of the Wishaw branch on their own account. This could be the Larkhall Economical Society who's treasurer and secretary were sued in 1864 for non-payment of goods[3]. The treasurer and secretary tried to argue that the society should be sued but, as the society was not registered, it was decided that they were personally liable.
Minute books and ledgers exist for Larkhall Co-opertaive Society from 1867. The indication is that the society had several attempts at opening a store before doing so successfully late in 1879[4]. The store was based in Montgomery Street.
The society joined the SCRS in 1970

LARKHALL VICTUALLING SOCIETY 1821-1970
The society was formed in 1821 by miners and weavers. The society's objective was to purchase goods in Glasgow and sell the goods at the lowst possible cost, so it did not pay a dividend. Each member had to have one share only, with the initial share cost being £1 1s. Withdrawl of the share carried a 6s charge.
By 1880 the society was selling goods at the market rate and paying members a dividend on share capital. It was considering a dividend on purchases. In 1892 the society stopped selling alcohol[5]. The society also started around this time paying members and non-members a dividend on purchases. The society registered around 1895.
When Lennoxtown Victualling joined Kirkintilloch in 1965, Larkhall Victualling became the oldest continuously opertaing co-operative society in Scotland. The society joined the SCRS in 1970
