The town was a significant manufacturer of jute and linen. Although the town was beside the Gairie Burn, it was dominated late on by hand loom weaving until the Bellies Brae, a linen factory, was opened in 1874. The mill specialised in jute production, with a later conversion to synthetic materials. The town had a nearby train station by 1855 with a station at the town built in 1861. The station was closed to passengers in 1952. The town is now primarily a market town and tourist centre.

KIRRIEMUIR EQUITABLE CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY 1839-1969

The Kirriemuir Equitable Association was formed in 1839 and was known as "Thrums". In 1858 it was reported that the society was moving into a new building in Kirriemuir. In 1861 they had two stores. At a general meeting in September that year it was reported that both salesmen had resigned and they were moving to the Rochdale system. The Kirriemuir Co-Operative Society was formed in 1861 but had not obtained a store. The committees of both societies agreed that they should merge under and the merger took place in November, with the name Kerriemuir Equitable Co-operative Society being used. The merger was effectively a continuation of the Kirriemuir Equitable Association with additional members.

The society reported in 1862 that it was issuing checks to members and non-members.

The society merged with Forfar United in 1969 to form South Angus. This merged with Arbroath in 1974 to form East Angus. East Angus merged with Lothian & Borders in 1998 to form Lothian, Borders & Angus.
