The village owas a small hamlet until the early 1900’s. Between 1905 and 1909 the North British Aluminium Company built Kinlochleven Aluminium Smelter and its associated hydro-electric plant. This led to Kinlochleven developing to accomodate the workers at the smelter and hydro-electric plant, growing to a community of over 1000 people.
 
The smelter was closed in 2000. The village is now a destination for outdoor enthusiasts with parts of the smelter plant converted into an outdoor centre and micro brewery.
