In 1778 a local man, Robert Knox, established a small linen bleaching facility and soon started a thread mill to make thread for tailoring and fish nets. His sons William and James started the company W & J Knox. They opened Dennyholm Mill in 1830, took over Stoneyholm Mill in 1864 and then Garnock Mill.
