JOHNSTONE CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY 1866-1962

The society was formed in 1866 by flax mill workers[1] and in Watson's 1870 directory of Paisley it is listed as the Flax Mills Workers' Co-operative Society. In 1873 engineers in Johnstone were proposing forming their own co-operative society[2]. A meeting with delegates from local co-operative societies, including Johnstone, suggested that they join Johnstone. However they decided to proceeding with amalgamation being an option if their society did not succeed. There is no mention of the engineer's society in the 1883 Co-operative Congress report suggesting that it did not succeed.

In 1898 an employee of te society was convicted of stealing tokens with a value of £15 and her mother with resetting two tokens with a value of £1 each[3]. In 1901 the society adopted the "Climax" system.

The society joined the SCWS in 1962.
