Jedburgh grew around the abbey. In 1460 it became the county town of Roxburghshire following the abandonment of Roxburgh and developed as a market town. Later in the 19th Century woolen mills were established at Jedburgh, the two largest Being Aller's Mill and Bongate Mill. A train station was opened in 1856 by the Jedburgh Railway Company. This closed in 1948.

JEDBURGH CO-OPERATIVE STORE COMPANY 1866-1968

The society was formed at a meeting in the Black Bull Assembly Room in late December 1866[1]. A store was opened at 7 Castlegate early in 1867 that sold bread in the evening. In 1870 the society moved to Exchange Street, eventually buying the premises. These premises burned down in 1898 resulting in the society constructing rebuilding the pemises, which opened in 1900. Around 1910 the society was in a serious situation and came volountarily under the control of the SCWS. In 1912 the society, in accordance with rule 19, suspended payement of capital for six months claiming that there was an extrodinary run on shares[2]. They repeated this every six months. In 1915 a member sued the society for the value of her 119 shares that were 10s per shares. The society lost the case and subsequent appeals because it failed to prove that there were subsequent runs on the shares.

The society merged with Hawick in 1968 to form Hawick & Jedburgh.

The Welfare Food Scheme was introduced in 1941 to supplement wartime rations for all children, expectant and nursing mothers and certain elderly people. The foods concerned were cod liver oil, concentrated orange juice and vitamin tablets. The Welfare Food Scheme continued until rationing was stopped in 1954.
