In July 1873 the Greenock Police Board opened a short section of tramline in Greenock, to Rue End Street. At the same time the Vale of Clyde Tramways Company opened the first section of a line from Greenock to Gourock. Both sections were operated by the Vale of Clyde Tramways Company.
In November 1889 the Greenock to Port Glasgow tramline was opened and operated by the Greenock and Port Glasgow Tramways Company. They took over the other two lines in 1893 and 1894.
The British Electric Traction Company (BETCo) obtained a controlling interest in the Greenock and Port Glasgow Tramways Company in 1899 and had electrified the tramlines by November 1901. The magnet and sparks on wheel device is the logo of BETCo and was used throughout it's operations. The same logo occurs on the tokens of the Yorkshire Woollen District Transport Company Ltd.
The Scottish General Transport Company was set up in Septemeber 1913 to manage the tramway companys BETCo owned in Scotland - Greenock and Port Glasgow Tramways Company, Airdrie and Coatbridge Tramways Company, and Rothesay Tramways Company. Ownership of Greenock and Port Glasgow Tramways Company was transfered to Scottish General Transport Company then.
